L2 electronics status

From BESIII Ferrara Group Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Here is reported the current status of Layer-2 electronics. Dead, noisy, strange, disconnected channels are listed with their explanation (when possible). The behavior of each TIGER of each GEMROC is reported, as well as the FEBs that show some issues and should be investigated.

Strips analysis[edit | edit source]

In this section, the status of L2 is analyzed from the strips point of view. The charge distribution of each strip is considered, allowing to spot the holes due to the microsectors (in order to remove them from the problematic channels), other missing strips and potential zones of high noise channels. The sections of the detector which are not between the two scintillators may be not fully included in this analysis due to the low statistics making it difficult to spot holes and other strange behavior.

Notes:
1) The strips annotated with "microS" show low charge and fewer hits due to the micro-sector geometry. This has a periodic pattern (one each 15-16 strips) and is well known.
2) The strips annotated with "almost no charge (VERY LOW NOISE: DISCONNECTED???)" have very few events and very low charge (<5-10 fC), but the threshold scan is ok and the test-pulse is detected correctly, so the channel seems alive --> this has to be understood
3) The strips annotated with "L2 planar glueing" have very few events and very low charge (<5-10 fC), but the threshold scan is ok and the test-pulse is detected correctly, so the channel seems alive --> this has to be understood

Channels analysis[edit | edit source]

In this section, the status of L2 is analyzed from the electronics point of view. The threshold scan and calibration files of each channel are considered, allowing to spot noisy and dead channels. In addition, some channels showing a lower than expected noise are annotated.

Note: channels in bold are close on the FEB-anode connector, therefore are also contiguous strips.

Summary[edit | edit source]

Here a summary of this analysis is reported.

  • DEAD CHANNELS = 13, where:
    • already dead in Turin = 3
    • died after Turin = 2 --> one is on a FEB that needs to be replaced (FEB_label=35)
    • related to connector issues = 8 (also lots of noisy channels close to each other)
  • NOISY CHANNELS = 30 (approx., after removing problematic FEBs), where:
    • channel 3 of chip 2 (which is at the edge of the anode-FEB connector) is the most recurrent one
  • CHANNELS WITH TOO LOW NOISE = 25 (approx., damaged anode tail channels not counted)
    • in the cosmic ray acquisition, these channels have a very low number of hits (and a very low charge), but the threshold scan is OK and the test-pulse is detected correctly, so the channel seems alive --> THIS NEEDS TO BE UNDERSTOOD
  • CHANNELS WITH FEW EVENTS AND LOW CHARGE NEAR THE PLANAR GLUEING = 5, where:
    • FEB_label = 30, chip 2
    • channels: 3, 11, 22, 4, 12 (threshold scan is OK, so the channels are alive)
    • strips: 631, 632, 633, 634, 635

FEBs to be investigated[edit | edit source]

List of FEBs that need to be checked:

  • FEB_label = 20 (GEMROC 5, TIGER 0-1, HW_FEB = 9)
    • high noise level
    • TO-DO: check grounding, bonding, anode-FEB connector (both sides)
    • IF NO ANOMALIES FOUND replace FEB
  • FEB_label = 26 (GEMROC 6, TIGER 4-5, HW_FEB = 5) -----> REPLACED HW_FEB = 50
    • had wrong calibration, now the channel response has been equalized through an "on-detector calibration"
    • TO-DO: check if new data (charge distribution) is ok
    • IF STILL NON-UNIFORMITY IS PRESENT replace FEB and calibrate
  • FEB_label = 32 (GEMROC 8, TIGER 0-1, HW_FEB = 30)
    • high noise level
    • TO-DO: check grounding, bonding, anode-FEB connector (both sides)
    • IF NO ANOMALIES FOUND replace FEB
  • FEB_label = 35 (GEMROC 8, TIGER 6-7, HW_FEB = 29) -----> REPLACED HW_FEB = 56
    • one chip without TP
    • TO-DO: check bonding, replace FEB
  • FEB_label = 37 (GEMROC 9, TIGER 2-3, HW_FEB = 11) -----> REPLACED HW_FEB = 57
    • high noise level
    • TO-DO: check grounding, bonding, anode-FEB connector (both sides)
    • IF NO ANOMALIES FOUND replace FEB
  • FEB_label = 38 (GEMROC 9, TIGER 4-5, HW_FEB = 12)
    • high noise level (could be due to FEB 37)
    • TO-DO: first check if after removing FEB 37 the noise decreases
    • TO-DO: otherwise check grounding, bonding, anode-FEB connector (both sides)
    • IF NO ANOMALIES FOUND replace FEB
  • FEB_label = 43 (GEMROC 10, TIGER 6-7, HW_FEB = 3)
    • anode tail damaged
